Discovered by halley in 1714. Go SW azimuth, then go up past Arcturus, +83 deg. alt.

Serpens is immediately W of Arturus/Bootes. Follow Bootes' left leg to M5.

Extremely bright, extremely large, extended 156°, gradually abruptly very much brighter middle bright nucleus; = M81. Magnitude: 6.9 RA: 09h 55m 49.7s Dec: +69°03'18" RA: 09h 55m 36.0s Dec: +69°04'00" (Epoch 2000) Azm: 336°24'04" Alt: +31°40'37" Always above horizon. Transit: 16:17 Size:20.0' x 9.0' Position Angle: 156.0 From M82: Angular separation: 00°37'01" Position angle: +181°40' Notes: Located in Ursa Major. Spiral Galaxy. AKA Bode's Nebula. Very close to M82.
